Licensing and using data from LDS

Creative Commons licensing

Access to almost all data from LDS is provided under a New Zealand Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (BY) license. This means you can use, reuse and share data as much as you like as long as you acknowledge LINZ as the original source of the data.

How to credit LINZ

When attributing LINZ you need to include a few details about the original work (data) and license. This includes, of course, crediting the data source as Land Information New Zealand. You may also like to provide a hyperlink to http://data.linz.govt.nz/.

Here's an example of attributing the LDS NZ Primary Parcel Layer:

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 New Zealand License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/nz/

These two resources from Creative Commons also provide best practice and presentation examples for attributions:

Simply choose the format that best suits your application, service or use.

Restricted data

Two data layers - those that provide information on the owner of a property title - have a customised license which you need to accept before being able to access this data.

This license enables LINZ to request that you change or delete such data to protect the privacy of personal information (owner names). If you have forwarded this information on to a third party, you must do so under the same conditions as the original license and ensure that the data has been changed or deleted.

The Creative Commons Attribution license applies to all other data attributes within these layers.

Visit the Restricted Owner Data Group page on the LDS website to view the full formal terms and conditions.
