New boat ramp for Alexandra

Work to replace Alexandra's Dunorling St boat ramp is due to begin in mid-March, Paul Jackson, Land Information New Zealand Crown Property Manager, said today.

A resource consent has been issued by the Otago Regional Council for the construction of the new ramp, and a contract has been issued.

Mr Jackson said the work is expected to take a month to complete, during which time the existing ramp will be closed.

It had been hoped to replace the ramp before the summer holiday period, however this has not been possible, Mr Jackson said.

The design of the new ramp has been agreed through consultation with the Central Otago District Council. When the new ramp is in place, the council will take over the ownership and maintenance of the facility, said Mr Jackson.

"We know the boat ramp is popular with recreational users and we're looking to minimise the disruption to them. The new ramp will be an asset to the community," said Mr Jackson.

Until conditions are suitable to replace the old ramp, a local contractor has been asked to monitor the ramp over summer and if necessary arrange for fill to be laid to minimise the risk of damage to boats.
