New Zealand Geospatial Strategy approved
2 April 2007
The New Zealand Geospatial Strategy has been approved by Cabinet. The strategy is designed to improve knowledge of and access to the geospatial assets owned, maintained or used by government. It recognises government's increasing reliance on geospatial information for a wide range of activities - from emergency services and national defence to utilities, resource management, biosecurity, and economic development.
The strategy sets out to co-ordinate and direct the way geospatial resources are developed and managed, and aims to ensure compatibility when data is collected by different agencies and reduce duplication and fragmentation of effort.
When implemented, the strategy will ensure geospatial information is appropriately preserved and protected and will help ensure the information needed by and provided to the public by government agencies and the private sector is authoritative and up to date (eg maps, land records, GIS and related information).
The strategy's governance structure ensures effective participation in decision-making by the key geospatial stakeholders - local government, relevant public sector agencies, Crown entities and industry. A Geospatial Office hosted by Land Information New Zealand is being established later this year. The office will co-ordinate the strategy, evaluate its implementation, and provide administrative and programme support to the Geospatial Executives Group (made up of chief executives of key public agencies responsible for driving implementation).
