LINZ Statement of Intent 2011-2014
Land Information New Zealand's (LINZ) Statement of Intent 2011-14 was tabled in Parliament today.
The Statement of Intent (SOI) is a public accountability document published annually, and details LINZ’s strategic direction for the coming three years.
In addition to our existing priorities, the Minister for Land Information has assigned LINZ an additional priority – to support the rebuilding of Canterbury.
"We are proud to be asked to contribute our technical expertise in the areas of surveying, topography, and hydrography towards rebuilding the region," says LINZ Chief Executive Colin MacDonald. "In addition, the work that the New Zealand Geospatial Office is doing with agencies that hold data that will be used to inform the rebuild, provides us with an opportunity to play an instrumental role in the recovery," says Mr MacDonald.
Geospatial information - data that is linked to geographic location – is an important driver of New Zealand's future economic growth (www.geopatial.govt.nz). It is playing an increasingly key role in contributing to Government efficiencies and infrastructure development, as well as business innovation.
"Better connecting New Zealand's geospatial information will deliver a range of benefits for New Zealanders including economic growth, informed decision-making and effective management of resources." says Mr MacDonald.
LINZ also has a key involvement in contributing to the cross-government drive to negotiate historic Treaty of Waitangi settlements by 2014, and build a stronger foundation for future Māori prosperity through the release of land assets to iwi around New Zealand.
Our other focus areas include ongoing innovation and improvement in the way we manage Crown-owned and used land, as well as ensuring the certainty and integrity of the property rights system. A robust property rights system supports enhanced economic performance and the ability for all New Zealanders to prosper.
We will continue to implement the Government’s direction for the South Island high country by introducing a new earning capacity-based rent system. This new system will be simpler to administer, fairer and more transparent.
Our Statement of Intent places a strong emphasis on continuing to contribute to economic development and delivering smarter services to New Zealanders within a climate of fiscal constraint. We will hold our performance levels to increasingly high standards to ensure that our initiatives are strategic and deliver on our stated outcomes.
