Notice of Weed Spraying in Rotorua Lakes
Property owners and users of the Rotorua Lakes, including for recreation, are advised that the herbicide diquat, will be used in gel form to control lake weed at several sites in the Rotorua Lakes.
The work is scheduled to begin from Tuesday 26 April and may continue intermittently until Tuesday 10 May, as weather and water conditions permit. Treatment will not take place during weekends or on public holidays.
As a precautionary measure only, Land Information New Zealand advises users not to take water from the Rotorua Lakes to consume or for irrigation purposes from the vicinity of the treatment area, until 24 hours after treatment.
An announcement will be made on Radio in advance of the programme commencing. Warning signs will be placed at major boat launching ramps near treatment sites before the herbicide is applied and will be removed 24 hours after treatment.
A boat will be used to apply the herbicide in the following locations:
- Lake Rotorua – Kawaha Point
- Lake Tarawera – Boatshed Bay
- Lake Tarawera – The Landing
- Lake Tarawera – Hot Water Beach
- Lake Rotoiti – Hauparu Bay
- Lake Rotoiti – Otaramarae Boat Ramp
- Lake Rotoiti – Kakaho Bay
- Lake Rerewhakaaitu – Homestead Arm
- Lake Okataina – Public Boat Ramp
- Lake Okataina – Log Pool Bay
- Lake Okataina – South West Corner
- Lake Okataina – Various other locations.
