Public Comment Sought on Revised Addressing Standard
A revised standard for rural and urban addressing is available for public comment through Standards New Zealand.
The standard establishes requirements and guidance for territorial authorities on:
- assigning addresses
- naming roads and localities / suburbs
- recording and mapping related information
- signage related to the above.
While LINZ is not responsible for the standard, we provided technical input into the draft along with other Australasian agencies and are responsible for the collection of street address data provided by territorial authorities.
The draft standard and options for commenting on it are available at the Standards New Zealand website. The closing date for comment is 10 June 2011.
To help ensure the quality and accessibility of national addressing data – which, amongst other uses, is vital for electoral, postal, and emergency service purposes – LINZ is developing an addressing strategy that will include the need for an authoritative national address dataset. The strategy will identify how the revised addressing standard will be applied in New Zealand. A draft of the strategy will be made available for comment later this year.
