Craig Armitage, General Manager Policy and Regulatory

The Policy and Regulatory Group is responsible for providing policy advice to the Minister for Land Information, administering and reviewing legislation, and establishing and monitoring standards for all areas of LINZ’s responsibilities. These include the geodetic and cadastral survey systems; land title registration; geospatial information; the management, acquisition and disposal of Crown land; valuation and rating valuation; place names and street addressing.

The Policy and Regulatory General Manager is Craig Armitage (pictured). Craig joined Land Information New Zealand in June 2011.

Previously, Craig was Deputy Chief Executive for Policy and Regulatory at the Department of Internal Affairs. Post the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, Craig took on specific responsibility for Earthquake Recovery at the Department.

Craig has more than 20 years' experience in the public service in New Zealand and the UK and was previously Deputy Secretary of Labour at the NZ Department of Labour.

Office of the Surveyor-General

The Office of the Surveyor-General sets standards for the cadastral and geodetic survey systems, and monitors and audits compliance with the standards. The Surveyor-General also has statutory responsibilities for aspects of the electoral system. Registrar-General of Land

The Registrar-General of Land team develops standards and sets an assurance programme for the land rights registration system. The team also provides technical policy advice for land registration matters and administers claims and reviews under the Land Transfer Act 1952. Valuer-General

The Valuer-General is responsible for regulating the rating valuations industry in accordance with the Rating Valuations Act 1998 including setting standards and making statutory decisions on the certification of general revaluations.

The Valuer-General also administers the Valuers Registration Board, which is responsible for occupational regulation of registered valuers and issues practising certificates in accordance with the Valuers Act 1948.

Policy

The Policy team develops policy advice for the Minister for Land Information relating to all LINZ responsibilities, including survey and land titles, geospatial information, crown land (eg: pastoral leases in the South Island high country), treaty settlements, rating valuation, topographic and hydrographic information. The team reviews LINZ-administered legislation, develops reviews and amends a range of regulations, responds to directives from the Minister and Cabinet and leads and is involved in all-of-government initiatives with other government agencies and stakeholders.
