Buying paper maps

LINZ topographic maps are available to the public through bookshops, outdoor stores and information centres. Topographic maps are available for all of New Zealand, its offshore islands, some Pacific Islands and the Ross Sea region.

Use the 1:50,000 map index and the 1:250,000 map index to work out the map sheet, reference number and name of the map you want. Printed copies of the smaller-scale maps are also available - check with map retailers.

Specialist or larger nationwide map retailers provide a wider range of maps, but not all outlets stock the full range.

Where to find old maps

Earlier maps may be viewed at the Alexander Turnbull Library or Archives New Zealand.

You can download a selected range of small-scale maps.

Where to find digital topographic data

You can purchase NZTopo vector data as a bulk data extract in LSLIFF format on DVD, which covers the entire country. However, if you require individual objects or groupings of like objects in formats other than LSLIFF, we recommend you contact a data distributor.

You can download small amounts of data as ESRI SHAPE files from NZTopoOnline, which is the electronic version of the New Zealand Topographic Database (NZTopo). It displays seamless coverage of the 1:50,000 scale topographic mapping of New Zealand.

If you are unfamiliar with digital data or you only want part of the country, then data distributors may be able to provide what you need.
