Biosecurity
As part of its day to day management of Crown property, LINZ carries out pest control works on Crown land. Generally this work involves the control of pest plants and animals - biosecurity. It includes:
- weed control on Crown land in the North and South Islands
- rabbit control on Crown land in Canterbury and other areas
- weed control in LINZ administered lakes and rivers
LINZ works with New Zealand local government and local communities to best control plant and animal pests. See 'Weed Control Delivers Results'.
LINZ's role
LINZ controls pest plants and animals on its lands including Crown owned river and lake beds. The department receives annual appropriations for weed and pest management and will develop a five-year pest plan to prioritise and manage this work. Pest control contractors are employed to implement the department's plans. LINZ's biosecurity work programme voluntarily follows the intent of Regional Pest Management Strategies, where these exist. Regional Councils, following a public consultation process, develop the strategies.
