LINZ's role
Property Management
Crown Property Management manages LINZ property and decides who can use it or occupy it and for what purposes. This includes the leasing/renting of LINZ property and general inquiries on property management. Members of the public may establish if any Crown-owned land is available to lease or occupy by licence by contacting the property management contractors.
Property Disposal
Crown Property Management also manages the Crown-owned land it is directly responsible for. This includes deciding which land no longer needs to be held by the Crown and can be disposed of. All Crown-owned land in disposal contracts must be processed in terms of Government legislation including Treaty settlement legislation such as the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement 1998 and/or Cabinet directives to determine if there is a requirement to:
- Offer it back to former owners or successors.
- Advertise it in the Office of Treaty Settlements (opens in a new window) Protection Mechanism for Maori land interests.
- Offer the land on the open market.
Crown-owned land is only able to be sold if it is part of a disposal contract and has been processed through the statutory and administrative requirements in '1-3' above. Members of the public may record their interest in purchasing any Crown owned land managed by CPM by sending their name and contact details to the disposal contractor, if the property is in a disposal contract. If the land is not in a current disposal contract, the land is not for sale. The public may send details of their interest in a property to the property management contractor for recording in the LINZ database.
