Decisions of The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa
The New Zealand Geographic Board or the Minister for Land Information make final decisions on proposed new or changed New Zealand place names. These place names become official by publication in the New Zealand Gazette. They are also publicly notified in various national and local newspapers.
The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa compiles lists of official place names with macrons to assist in mapping, signage, reporting, legislation, or other official documents.
Interim decisions are made by the Board and are subject to public consultation / submissions through notifications of 'Intentions to Assign' in the New Zealand Gazette and Newspapers. These 'final' and 'interim' notices are mirrored on these decisions pages. Find out more about place name decisions.
