Land Records

LINZ looks after millions of land records for the Crown including: property titles, survey plans, Crown grants and indexes. You can access copies of these and other records throught a variety of methods.

To order a copy of a land record you must be able to provide:

  • the land district your search relates to
  • the appropriate record reference number (e.g. a title reference, CT 15B/1437)
  • the record type.

Ordering Information

You can order a copy of a land record:

  • using a search agent. Find a search agent in the yellow pages. (Look under: Real Estate Agents, Property Management, Land Information, Resource Management Document Services, Legal Agents, Lawyers, Surveyors.)
  • through the LINZ"Skylight" Internet ordering system and paying the appropriate LINZ fees
  • by visiting a LINZ processing centre and paying the appropriate LINZ fees

Anyone can order a copy of a land record (including copies of titles and survey information held in Landonline), subject to size and fragility.
'Original' records and records which cannot be copied due to their size and fragility, must be viewed at the appropriate LINZ processing centre.

Delivery

Requests for records made directly to a LINZ processing centre or via Skylight are generally delivered by post, fax or collection. The method of dispatch will be as you have indicated on your order. Please note that we do not deliver copies of records by email.

Please note that, as a guide, once an order has been received (with all relevant information included), LINZ will make the requested information ready for delivery within 2 working days. LINZ will notify you of the required payment before your order is delivered.

How to find land reference information

LINZ has 30 million records. There are many different types of records but to help you, we have divided them into 12 main record types

We have provided information on each record type:

  • a plain English explanation
  • some historical information
  • the information you need to give LINZ when you request a record
  • where to get that information.

Please note: The information relates to record types, not individual records. You will not be able to search for individual records or individual record references.
