Titles and Records

Titles

A title is a record of property ownership.

What's available

LINZ's role

Every time private land is bought or sold in New Zealand, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) records the transaction onto the property title. Conveyancers and lawyers lodge legal documents (transfers, records of sale, discharge mortgages, new mortgages). LINZ registers the changes to the title.

Titles tell you the current property owner and other key information. Titles, survey plans and related documents are now available online through Landonline (registered users only).

Claims for compensation

If you have incurred a financial loss due to incorrect information in the Land Transfer Act Register, you may be able to claim compensation. Not all incorrect information entitles you to apply for compensation.

Examples where you may be entitled to a claim are a mistake in the Register, or false information in the Register as a result of fraudulent transactions. For further information contact the Registrar-General of Land.

Other land records

LINZ looks after millions of other land records for the Crown including:

  • Crown grants
  • Deeds
  • Indexes

Anyone can order a copy of a land record (including copies of titles and survey information held in Landonline), subject to size and fragility.

Maori land records

The Maori Land Court (MLC) holds the majority of Maori land records. If you are searching for Maori land records, we suggest you contact the MLC in the first instance.
