260 Map Index Details

Land Information New Zealand is responsible for the Crown's authoritative National Topographic Database. This is used to produce the Topographic Map 260 Series at 1: 50 000. The purpose of this Map Series is to present, within the limits of good legibility, the fullest representation of topographic information possible at that scale.

The 260 Map Index displays the layout of the printed map sheets which cover New Zealand. Sheet lines are defined by the New Zealand Map Grid and standard 260 map sheets are 40km E-W and 30km N-S. It should be noted that in some cases, where land area is small (such as that in B47, see diagram below), two or more grid areas are combined into a single map sheet.

There are also cases where multiple map sheets are used to cover a single area (such as R06 see diagrams below). In these cases the delimitation of the hard copy map may not be exactly defined by the map grid area.

Therefore the configuration as shown in this Index may not reflect the exact nature of what is found on a hard copy map.  However, the 260 Map Index is a useful tool for map retailers and the general public to quickly identify which map sheet they require for any given area. Map retailers hold copies of these hard copy maps and members of the public can use the information outlined in the Index to request the map required.
