Roles and Responsiblities

Objectives of the Valuer-General

The overall objective of the Valuer-General is to address the Government's required outcomes for the rating valuations sector, which are:

  • to ensure a nationally consistent, impartial, independent and equitable valuation system at least cost, which maintains the integrity of property valuation and underpins public confidence in the rating system
  • to provide an independent quality assurance of valuations for rating purposes, and
  • to introduce contestability into the rating valuations market.

Functions and responsibilities of the Valuer-General

To achieve these outcomes the office of the Valuer-General has the following functions and responsibilities:

  • to provide technical advice to Government on valuation issues and the regulation of the valuation services sector
  • to set minimum quality standards and specifications for rating valuations
  • to monitor and audit the valuations provided by valuation providers against the minimum standards and specifications
  • to certify to local authorities (and through them, to ratepayers) that the resulting valuations meet the minimum standards for a fair and consistent property valuation system.
