Pest Animals
in the Otago region.
LINZ works to control pest animals on LINZ-administered Crown land.
Learn here about current LINZ programmes for pest animals, the control methods used and the implementation of pest control.
Control methods
Pest animals are controlled using a combination of shooting and poison methods.
Control takes place using ground and aerial application depending on the accessibility and scale of infestation.
Where practicable, poison baits are applied by ground application. The current preferred poison types are 1080 and / or Pindone coated baits. LINZ carries out control based on industry best practice and complies with relevant legislation and ERMA recommendations for poison work. Refer to the ERMA website for information on 1080, including monitoring, reporting and best practice.
Implementation of pest control
Public consultation
The annual control programmes are finalised after consultation with interested parties such as local iwi, regional councils, Fish & Game, landowners and local interest and user groups.
Public notices
Before a control programme takes place, the public are informed via local newspaper and radio notices, and signage near the control areas. Read the latest biosecurity public notices.
