Waitaki and Otiaki River Rabbit Control
24 June: Rabbit control work delayed
This control work has been delayed by weather conditions and is now programmed to take place in July.
Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) advises that hand laying of carrot baits containing Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) will occur in the Waitaki and Otiake Rivers in the first period of favourable weather between 16 June and 30 June 2009.
The area being treated involves up to 200ha of Crown-administered riverbed between the Kurow State Highway 82 Bridge and 1km downstream of the Otiake River confluence of the Waitaki River, and also includes the lower sections of the Kurow and Otiake Rivers.
Please note that hand laying of the toxic baits will be preceded by application of non-toxic baits to ensure against bait shyness. Toxic carrot baits will be dyed green.
This pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. The area is to be treated with caution until 1 January 2010.
