Find out more...Access to Crown Land

Public access to Crown land may be limited due to a range of activities that are required to be undertaken on Crown land. These include pest control, farming, forestry or commercial recreation. There are also animal welfare, biosecurity and health and safety considerations.

You may also want to check the biosecurity public notices for upcoming biosecurity control programmes. Also be aware that many other commercial activities are carried out which are not publicly notified.

Access to Crown forests

If Crown forest land is licensed for commercial use you would have to contact the licensee for permission to access the land.

Access to conservation land

For Crown conservation land administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC), check the DOC website for information about tracks or contact your DOC regional office about access conditions.

Access to pastoral lease land

For land in pastoral lease, you would need to contact the leaseholder to request access. Search the list of pastoral leaseholders in status and location of Crown pastoral land.

Access for pest control

You must apply to LINZ's biosecurity service provider for permission to undertake pest control on Crown land. Check the details listed under Biosecurity in Crown property contacts.
