LINZ identifies properties which the Crown no longer needs and are available for sale or transfer. The properties selected for the LINZ disposal programme must meet set criteria.

Disposal process

The process for disposal is set out in government legislation and takes into account Treaty settlement legislation and/or Cabinet directives. LINZ can sell the Crown-owned property if it is part of a LINZ disposal contract.

LINZ first has to determine if there is a requirement to complete all the following:

  1. Offer it back to former owners or successors.
  2. Advertise it in the Office of Treaty Settlements - Protection Mechanism for Māori land interests.
  3. Meet Department of Conservation and other clearances.

Find a property for sale

Only property in a current LINZ disposal contract is available for sale. For most properties LINZ uses accredited suppliers contracted to dispose of Crown-owned property.

Register future interest

You can register your interest about:

  • property not in a current LINZ disposal contract
  • purchasing any other Crown-owned property.

This will be recorded in the LINZ property database. You will be asked to provide information to identify the land applied for including its:

  • address
  • legal description
  • location and
  • plan.
