Proposals sought for removing tyres
3 June 2009
Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is seeking proposals for purchasing and removing a large stockpile of tyres illegally dumped on Crown Land at 50 Mersey St, Napier.
Acting Manager Crown Property Margaret Kennedy said the department wants to hear from reputable organisations with expertise in removing end-of-life tyres. A "request for proposal" has been advertised on the Government Electronic Tender Service website (GETS reference: 26226).
“Independent advice we have received suggests that end of life tyres can be put to good use – for instance in roading – we now want to test the market to see if there are any firms interested in putting a proposal to us.”
Ms Kennedy said that those responding to the request are being asked to demonstrate that the tyres can be removed in a timely manner, and in accordance with relevant local authority requirements, government policy and statutory regulations.
“We will require assurances that the tyres will be disposed of responsibly as we don’t want them simply dumped to cause headaches for someone else,” Ms Kennedy said.
Ms Kennedy said that she was also expecting to receive a draft report this week providing expert advice for managing and removing the tyres.
“Once the report is finalised we’ll be in a good position to decide on any proposals we may receive. It will also provide us with options if the proposals don’t come up with an adequate solution.”
