Lake Karapiro - Notice of Weed Spraying

Public notice: Property owners and users of Lake Karapiro, including for recreation, are advised that the herbicide diquat will be applied in gel form to selected sites between Little Waipa Domain and Lake Karapiro Domain for lakeweed (hornwort) control. Sites programmed for control include, but are not necessarily limited to:

• Horahora Domain;
• Finlay Park/Epworth;
• Moanaroa Reserve;
• Keeleys Reserve;
• Upper Karapiro;
• Mid Karapiro;
• Lower Karapiro;
• Little Waipa Domain;
• Rowing Course;
• Lake Karapiro Domain; and
• Selected shoreline areas.

The work is scheduled to begin from Monday 16 August 2010 and may continue intermittently to Friday 27 August 2010, as weather and water conditions permit.

As a precautionary measure only, Land Information New Zealand advises users not to take water from the Lake Karapiro to consume or for irrigation purposes from the vicinity of the treatment area, until 24 hours after treatment has been completed.

Notices will be placed at www.linz.govt.nz and on More FM, The Breeze, Radio Live and Solid Gold Radio prior to the planned spray dates. Warning signs will be placed at authorised public boat ramps prior to and during treatment and will be removed 24 hours after treatment.

A helicopter will be used to apply the herbicide between the hours of 6.30am and 5.00pm when conditions are suitable.

The Hazard classification for diquat is 6.1C, 6.3A, 6.9A, 8.1A, 9.1A and 9.3C.
