LINZ exists to maintain and regulate Crown and private property rights in New Zealand, and to make available the geographic information about New Zealand that underpins property rights, national security and emergency services responses. The establishment of LINZ as a government department in 1996 was the latest chapter in the lengthy history of land information in New Zealand. Find out more about our whakapapa.

LINZ takes its Māori name Toitū te Whenua from the proverb Whatungarongaro te tangata toitū te whenua: “people pass on, but land remains”. Land is central to New Zealanders' national identity and to the country's economic growth, and it will exist long after we have gone.

Managing the land sustainably is a large part of what LINZ does. Even at the most basic level, the organisation works to reduce carbon emissions and introduce sustainable practices in its offices. Read all about sustainability at LINZ.
