Survey Control Networks

New Zealand’s survey control system comprises physical control marks and information about them to enable the coordinates of other points to be determined. The control system is segmented into six control networks which provide control marks for specific purposes.

Each control network has its own accuracy, monumentation and information requirements that relate to the particular networks purpose. The requirements for each network are specified in the Standard for the NZ Survey Control System (LINZS25003) and the Guideline for the Provision and Maintenance of the Survey Control System (LINZG25704). Control marks are assigned to one or more control networks if the achieve the requirements for each network. The six control networks are:

National reference frame

The NRF provides the connection between national geodetic and vertical datums, and international reference systems. more…

Deformation monitoring network

The DMN monitors national-scale tectonic deformation. It also monitors regional and local-scale deformation to maintain the NZGD2000 deformation model, to maintain the other control networks for the effects of deformation and to re-establish the other control networks following a major deformation event. more…

Cadastral horizontal control network

The CHN provides the street-level control marks that are used by surveyors to connect to and orient cadastral surveys in terms of the official geodetic datum (NZGD2000). more…

Cadastral vertical control network

The CVN provides the street-level control marks that are used by surveyors to connect cadastral surveys to the official vertical datum (NZVD2009). more…

Basic geospatial network

The BGN provides a national coverage of control marks (including the offshore islands and Antarctica) to enable users to efficiently connected to official geodetic and vertical datums. more…

National height network

The NHN ensures that important precise levelling control marks are retained and that geometric heights are determined for new control marks. more…
