Development of Real-Time Position Data
Data from some of LINZ’s network of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations, PositioNZ, is now available in real-time, as part of a development to upgrade the entire network to real-time capability by mid-2011.
The new service, PositioNZ-RT, sees position data streamed to users every second, from 20 of the 33 continuously operating PositioNZ stations. This is an upgrade from where position data is recorded every 30-seconds and provided in hourly and daily files.
“LINZ aims to provide free real-time GNSS data through PositioNZ-RT in order to encourage economic benefits for a range of industries,” says National Geodesist Graeme Blick.
A report released last year revealed that real-time positioning technology may benefit the New Zealand economy in the tens of millions of dollars over the next decade.
“As part of the upgrade, LINZ is also developing a monitoring tool for PositioNZ-RT that will supply information on the quality and continuity of the data we provide,” Graeme says.
