Standards & Guidelines

Find geodetic standards published by LINZ, plus fact sheets and specifications.

Standards

Standards describe criteria that must be followed to achieve compliance.

New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (LINZS25000), defines the official geodetic datum for New Zealand, NZGD2000, 2007.

Ross Sea Region Geodetic Datum 2000 (LINZS25001), defines the official geodetic datum for the Ross Sea region of Antarctica, RSRGD2000, 2007.

NZGD2000 Projections (LINZS25002), defines a range of projections in terms of NZGD2000 that can be used for topographic mapping and cadastral surveys in New Zealand, its offshore islands and the continental shelf, 2008. This amended standard replaces the version published on 16 November 2007.

Survey Control System (LINZS25003), defines the requirements of the national survey control system, 2009.

New Zealand Vertical Datum 2009 (LINZS25004), defines the official vertical datum for New Zealand, NZVD2009, 2009.

Geospatial Accuracy Framework (LINZS25005), defines a framework for describing and assessing the accuracy of coordinates and spatial data, 2009.

Tiers, Classes and Orders of LINZ Data (LINZS25006), defines the tiers, classes and orders that are used to describe the accuracy of LINZ datasets and coordinates within Landonline, 2009.

Darwin Glacier Lambert Conformal 2000 Projection (LINZS25007), defines a projection for topographic mapping in the Darwin Glacier region of Antarctica, 2008.

Note: LINZS25005 and LINZS25006 came into effect on 21 September 2009, however they will not be implemented into Landonline and the Geodetic Database until the Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010 come into effect, which is planned for May 2010.

Guidelines & fact sheets

Guidelines and fact sheets provide explanation of how standards can be applied and describe different services or products that are offered by LINZ.

New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 fact sheet (LINZG25700), explains the NZGD2000 and defines the transformation to previous geodetic datums, 2008.

Ross Sea Region Geodetic Datum 2000 fact sheet (LINZG25701), explains the RSRGD2000, 2008.

NZGD2000 Projections fact sheet (LINZG25702), explains the NZGD2000 projections, 2008.

Datum and projection transformation fact sheet (LINZG25703), explains how to convert coordinates between Tranverse Mercator projections, Lambert Conformal projections and geodetic datums, 2008.

Provision and maintenance of the survey control system (LINZG25704), describes how the survey control system is to be implemented by LINZ Customer Services, 2009.

Survey Mark Protection Brochure (pdf 322KB), explains why it is important to protect survey marks and how to report damage or disturbances to survey marks, 2003.

PositioNZ fact sheet (pdf 61KB), provides a general overview of the PositioNZ continuous GNSS network, 2002.

Specifications for geodetic contractors

Specifications are published by LINZ for use by geodetic service contractors who provide services to enhance and maintain the New Zealand geodetic network. These documents are regularly updated.

The following specifications still apply to contracts ending March 2010:

As at 28 October 2009 the current specifications are:
