Governance of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy
Governance of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy is three-tiered, comprising:
- a Joint Ministerial Group
- a Geospatial Executives Group (GEG)
- a Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC).
The structure given below also outlines the role of the New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO).

Joint Ministerial Group
The Ministers jointly responsible for the Strategy are:
Geospatial Executives Group (GEG)
The Geospatial Executives Group (GEG) is responsible for managing the successful delivery of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy. The GEG represents various sectors and agencies with significant geospatial programmes of work. It is chaired by the Chief Executive of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and is comprised of five government agency Chief Executives, as well as the Chair of the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) and the CEO of the New Zealand ICT Group (NZICT):
- Department of Conservation
- Envrionment Bay of Plenty
- Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
- New Zealand Transport Authority
- Statistics New Zealand
- Spatial Industries Business Association
- New Zealand ICT Group.

Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC)
The Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC) reports to the GEG and is responsible for implementing the strategy. The GSC is chaired by the Geospatial Custodian and comprises ten members representing a range of government agencies and sectors:
- Department of Conservation
- Environment Bay of Plenty
- Land Information New Zealand
- NIWA
- New Zealand Defence Force
- New Zealand Police
- New Zealand Transport Authority
- Statistics New Zealand
- Transpower
- Wellington City Council.

New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO)
The New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO) is headed up by the Geospatial Custodian. Our role is to implement the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy through our work programme. The initial focus of the programme has been to encourage a more coordinated approach to managing government's geospatial information resources.
