Lake Karapiro Weed Spraying Notice

Update 13 May 2008

This work has been completed. LINZ thanks the public for their cooperation.

6 May 2008

Recreational and other users of Lake Karapiro are advised that the herbicide diquat, in gel form, will be used on selected sites between Little Waipa Domain and Lake Karapiro Domain for lakeweed (hornwort) control.

Sites programmed for control include, but are not necessarily limited to: Horahora Domain, Finlay Park/Epworth, Moanaroa Reserve, Keeleys Reserve, Upper Karapiro, Mid Karapiro, Little Waipa Domain, Rowing course, Lake Karapiro Domain and selected shoreline areas.

The work is scheduled for Monday 12 May 2008. If weather or water conditions prevent the work from being carried out, the operation will take place on the next suitable weekday. The work may continue intermittently until 30 May 2008. No work will take place on weekends or on public holidays.

For the safety of the public and contractors, lake users are requested not to use the treatment sites during the herbicide treatment. The treatment involves application of an organic dye and herbicide by helicopter.

As a precautionary measure only, users are also advised not to take drinking or irrigation water from the vicinity of the treatment sites until 24 hours after treatment.
