Paper copies of New Zealand charts
Paper charts are the conventional means for publishing hydrographic information.
When purchasing a chart, check the Chart Catalogue for any updates that have been made to the chart since it was dispatched from the LINZ warehouse.
LINZ charts are sold by large ship chandlers at the major ports, including principal and correcting chart retailers. Principal chart retailers simply sell charts, while correcting chart retailers have the authority to update the official charts.
Follow this link to locate your nearest LINZ chart retailer, including overseas retailers of New Zealand charts.
Digital copies of New Zealand charts
Paper charts have been scanned as high resolution tiffs and low resolution jpegs and may be downloaded free of charge.
Download NZMariner Raster Navigational Charts, and find technical information about format, encryption and use, plus availability and coverage.
Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) are specifically designed for use in electronic navigational systems on board ships.
Applying corrections to charts
LINZ publishes corrections to the charts every fortnight as Notices to Mariners (NTM). These show details such as lights that have been extinguished, or where new sandbanks may have emerged, or buoys have been moved.
Commercial mariners and other parties covered by Maritime Rule 25 (pdf 40KB) must update their nautical publications, including charts, with the corrections published in the NTMs.
NTMs are posted on this website in pdf format, and can be obtained from chart retailers at major ports of New Zealand.
Maritime New Zealand offices (pdf 181KB) also hold copies for viewing.
You can also subscribe to receive Notices to Mariners by email.
Guidance on how to apply NTM corrections to nautical charts can be found in the British Admiralty publication How to Keep Your Admiralty Charts Up To Date (NP294), which is sold in New Zealand by the Admiralty Chart Agent Trans Pacific Marine Ltd.
Sale of Charts
All charts supplied from our wholesale distributor, Blue Star, are certified by LINZ as correct up to the date of supply, and meet the requirements of Maritime Rules Part 25: Nautical Charts and Publications [Rule 25.7(2A)(a)].
The on-sale of charts published and purchased in New Zealand is restricted for vessels which must comply with Maritime Rules Part 25: Nautical Charts and Publications [25.3 (1)].
LINZwill notify the cancellation or withdrawal of any chart, and advise details of New Editions or New Charts through Notice to Mariner publications.
Retailers must not sell any chart which has been withdrawn or cancelled without notifying the purchaser of such cancellation or withdrawal.
Retailers must not sell any cancelled chart more than two months after either cancellation or withdrawal.
