Sea Level Data Now Available from LINZ

17 November 2008

Sea level data – also known as tide gauge readings – from LINZ’s network of sea level monitoring sites are now available through the LINZ website. This completes an important step in LINZ’s delivery of the monitoring network, which has been developed in response to the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

“For the first time, LINZ has responsibility for sea level monitoring sites, so we are now able to make the data freely available through our website,” says LINZ Senior Hydrographic Data Analyst, Glen Rowe. “Whilst the primary purpose of the monitoring network is to enhance New Zealand’s response to tsunami hazards, the data is being made available so that it can be used for other purposes.”

Available with each raw data download is information on the location of the monitoring site, including its position coordinates, a map and an image of the monitoring site in its environment.

At present, data is collected from seven sea level monitoring sites around New Zealand, its offshore islands and Antarctica. The first site was established in March 2007 and a total of 19 are planned to be installed by mid-2010.

View a map of the remaining planned sites and download sea level data from the existing sites.
