Dr Don Grant joins the Board as Chair, an ex-officio position under his statutory position as Surveyor-General.

Don Grant holds a BSc Honours in Physics from Canterbury University, a Diploma in Surveying from Otago University and a PhD in Surveying from the University of New South Wales. He registered as a surveyor in 1979 and is a licensed cadastral surveyor.

Between 1991 and 1994, he served as Chief Geodesist for the United Nations Iraq Kuwait Boundary Demarcation Commission.

Don was appointed Deputy Surveyor-General of New Zealand in 1996.

Since 2005, Don has been Surveyor-General, after acting in that position for a year. He is responsible for the geodetic and cadastral survey systems of New Zealand, and also has some responsibilities for electoral boundaries as well as the Board Chair. In 2007 he was made a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors.
