Dr Sir Tipene O’Regan was first appointed in 1985 becoming the Ngāi Tahu nominee in 1999.
He led the Ngāi Tahu Treaty claims to settlement in 1998 and was one of the four negotiators of the Māori Fisheries settlements of 1989 and 1992.
He has a wealth of knowledge regarding place names and has written and lectured extensively on Māori history.
He has been heavily involved in Māori and development issues for over 45 years.
Although best known for his role in the development and re-capitalisation of his own Ngāi Tahu people, he has had a long involvement with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the old National Museum of New Zealand which was recognised in 2005 with the Heritage Award of the Historic Places Trust.
He holds three honorary degrees, a Doctorate of Letters from the University of Canterbury and Doctor of Commerce degrees from Lincoln and Victoria Universities.
He is currently Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori at the University of Canterbury and Upoko of the Awarua Rūnanga of Ngāi Tahu.
