Public Consultation Open for New Zealand Geographic Board Name Proposals
Public consultation opens today for 55 proposals to assign new place names or alter existing place names. The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa has publicly notified these proposals in the New Zealand Gazette after accepting them at its August Board meeting. In the next few days, various newspapers throughout the country will also include public notice advertisements.
August Board meeting
At its August meeting, the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa supported 55 proposals and also declined and deferred a number of other proposals.
Some of the proposals include:
- changing the name South Ridge of Aoraki / Mount Cook to ‘Hillary Ridge’ in honour of the late Sir Edmund Hillary
- changing and assigning names to 22 Porirua suburb and locality names, and
- assigning the ‘Kairangi’ grouping of names to geographic features in Wellington.
It also made final decisions on proposals which have been publicly consulted on during 2009 and 2010.
Public consultation process
Any member of the public can make a submission to the Board either supporting or objecting to these proposals. Submissions can be made in writing to the Secretary for the New Zealand Geographic Board or via the LINZ website.
All proposals have been publicly notified in the New Zealand Gazette, and public notices will be published in national and various relevant local newspapers, as well as on the LINZ website.
The consultation period for each of these proposals varies between one and three months.
The Board will consider all submissions (received before the end of the designated consultation period), at its next Board meeting, which is likely to be March or April next year.
