General background
At the Board’s previous meeting of 27 March 2009, decisions were made on (i) the extent of the Landsborough River and (ii) on the spelling alteration from Clarkes Mound to Clarke Mound. However, no decision/resolution was made by the Board for the extent of the Clarke River.
The Board had previously accepted that the extent of the Landsborough River reached from its headwaters through to its confluence with the Haast River. Information provided by the FMC Board member (at the 27 March 2009 meeting) provided evidence to the Board of the tectonic action over time changing the course of the river, forcing its way through the Main Divide, with the Landsborough River becoming the larger of the two rivers.
The deduction from this is that the extent of the Clarke River then flows from its headwaters into the Landsborough River. However, no resolution was made to this effect at the Board’s last meeting. This matter now therefore needs formal agreement by the Board.
Note: the proposer was not convinced by the reasoning for the current naming of these rivers and sought evidence of the Board’s decision in an email of 7 April 2009. A response was provided by the Secretariat on 15 April 2009. No further comment has been received from the proposer.
