General Background
Apart from the macron matter, no issues arose from the REVIEW undertaken by the Secretary for Hāwea Conservation Park, and so it was CONCURRED with by the Secretary on 15 June 2009, subject to confirmation from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) as to orthography, macrons, full name and translation (if applicable) of ‘Hāwea’. DOC was asked in an email of 15 June 2009 to consult with TTWh and to advise the Secretary of the outcome of that communication. Note that this CPA name proposal was received by the Secretariat before the Standard was agreed, which is why DOC had not undertaken the consultation with TTWh in the first instance.
DOC then proceeded to declare and name this specially protected area as Hāwea Conservation Park in NZ Gazette 2009 page 2640, which meant that it does not need to be gazetted by the Board, but it does need to be notified in newspapers.
This CPA name is now official and has been included in the Gazetteer of Official CPA Names. With Hāwea Conservation Park now an official CPA name, consideration may need to be given by the Board to alter the other existing Hawea names to Hāwea:
- This CPA name proposal uses a name associated with the adjacent Lake Hawea. The lake name itself is classified as a recorded name;
- The locality of Lake Hawea, along the southernmost shores, is an official geographic name, i.e. it has been gazetted by the Board [refer to NZ Gazette 1988 (93) p.2239];
- Hawea River (south of Lake Hawea);
- Hawea Flat (locality south of Lake Hawea);
- Hawea Island (Fiordland);
- Hawea Point (Raglan);
- Hawea Stream (south of Hastings);
- Mangahawea Bay (Bay of Islands).
The Board may wish to consider formalising the other recorded Hawea names by approving them under Section 10(1)(b) of the NZGB Act, and also foregoing the public notification/consultation phase by applying Section 24 of the NZGB Act.
Action for the Board
To NOTE:
- Because this CPA name is now Hāwea Conservation Park, the Board may wish to consider altering the other existing Hawea names to Hāwea.
- The Board may wish to consider approving the existing recorded Hawea names, as official.
