General Background

Apart from the macron matter for Orangipuku River Scenic Reserve, no issues arose from the REVIEW undertaken by the Secretary for Orangipuku River Scenic Reserve and Mosquito Creek Scenic Reserve, and so they were CONCURRED with by the Secretary on 12 June 2009, subject to confirmation from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) as to orthography, macrons, full name and translation (if applicable) of ‘Orangipuku’.

DOC was asked in an email of 12 June 2009 to consult with TTWh and to advise the Secretary of the outcome of that communication. Note that these CPA name proposals were received by the Secretariat before the Standard was agreed, which is why DOC had not undertaken the consultation with TTWh in the first instance.

If Orangipuku River Scenic Reserve is to be the CPA name with macrons, then consideration may need to be given by the Board to alter the other existing Orangipuku name to align, i.e. Orangipuku River.

Notwithstanding the macron issue, both Orangipuku River Scenic Reserve and Mosquito Creek Scenic Reserve are named from existing recorded name features: Orangipuku River and Mosquito Creek. The Board may therefore wish to consider formalising the river names by approving them under Section 10(1)(b) of the NZGB Act, and also foregoing the public notification/consultation phase by applying Section 24 of the NZGB Act.

These CPA names are not yet official as final decisions have yet to be made. Once they have been gazetted by either DOC or the Secretariat, they will be included in the Gazetteer of Official CPA Names.

Action for the Board

To NOTE:

  • if the CPA name for Orangipuku River Scenic Reserve requires macrons, then the Board may wish to consider altering Orangipuku River accordingly
  • notwithstanding the macron issue, the Board may wish to consider approving the existing recorded name features, Orangipuku River and Mosquito Creek, as official.
