Rāngaiika Place Name Report 16 September 2009
General background
At its last meeting of 27 March 2009, the Board agreed that this locality name, Rangaiika, was classified as a ‘Recorded Name to be Approved’ pursuant to section 24 of the NZGB Act 2008, i.e. no public notification was necessary as the Board did not think it was likely that the public would object.
Therefore Rangaiika was published in the NZ Gazette on 14 May 2009 as an approved recorded place name, and it became effective as at that date – NZ Gazette 2009 page 1498 refers. Just before this gazettal, a response to a letter dated 8 April 2009 was received from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) in an email dated 11 May 2009, that this name should include a macron over the first ‘a’. TTWh advised that Rāngaiika means a shoal (rāngai) of fish (ika). At that point it was too late to withdraw the Gazettal.
So currently, the name is now official as Rangaiika without the macron. To remedy this, the Board must decide whether to proceed to notify a proposed spelling alteration, i.e. from Rangaiika to Rāngaiika, through the full statutory process, with public notification.
