Stokes Peak Place Name Report

General background

At the last Board meeting of 27 March 2009, the Board agreed to defer its decision on this proposal in order to confirm support from tangata whenua for the unnamed hill on which geodetic code A4JU is located, near Gibralter Rock, Harry Road, south of Te Puke.

Correspondence has been entered into with Te Rūnanga o Ngāiterangi, Ngāti Pukenga, Waitaha Raupatu Trust, and Tauranga Moana Māori Trust Board (30 April 2009). A response from Waitaha Raupatu Trust communicated non support for this proposal – see file note of 11 May 2009. This feature has an old pa site named Maungaruahine on it. The feature is also locally known as Suicide Park. It was suggested that the Ngāiterangi area was the most appropriate area within which to name a feature after Dame Evelyn.

Communications have been had with Dr Wharehuia Milroy and Dr Apirana Mahuika, seeking their assistance with discussing the matter directly with Matiu Dickson of Ngāiterangi (Waikato University). A map of two un-named trig stations in the Kaimai Ranges has been provided to Dr Milroy 6 July 2009.

See report for meeting of 8 April 2008 for duplication of Stokes in Marlborough, Otago, North Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington and Nelson – none of which are for a ‘Peak’. Confusion from duplication is not likely to be an issue of concern for emergency services or location positioning.

Two other peak feature options in the Kamai Range have been provided for the Board’s consideration in the attached map. This area falls wholly within the Ngāiterangi rohe and straddles between Tauranga and Waikato – the areas for which Dame Evelyn had strong ties. The higher of these two at 814m, for which the geodetic mark is named 5793, being located directly above the Kamai Railway Tunnel, is possibly the most appropriate, with uninterrupted views of either side of the range.
