Notice of Intention to Assign Place Names

New Zealand Geographic Board logo.

Pursuant to section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice is hereby given of the intention of the New Zealand Geographic Board to assign the altered or new names stated in the headings of the Schedule below, to the respective places described in the text following the headings of the Schedule.

Objection to the proposed names may be given in writing, setting out the grounds for objection, to the Secretary of the New Zealand Geographic Board, C/- Land Information New Zealand, Private Box 5501, Wellington, within a period of 3 months from the date of the New Zealand Gazette containing this notice.

Wellington Land District

Ruatangata Railway Station

Located approximately 3 km east of Whangaehu at the intersection between Ruatangata Road and the Marton New Plymouth Railway. Topographic map 260 S22 Whangaehu, GR 2698100E 6131500N. Currently named Whangaehu Railway Station.

Nelson Land District

Mount Blackadder
Mountain at height 1531m, approximately 7 km north west of Springs Junction. Topographic map 260 L31 Springs Junction, GR 2438500E 5880200N. Not named on current mapping. Trig 4611 located at peak.

Mount Snowdon
Mountain along the currently named Snowden Range, between Lake Stanley and Waingaro River. Topographic map 260 M26 Cobb, GR 2476600E 6019000N. Currently named Mt Snowden.

Snowdon Range
Range, extending south easterly from Douglas Range and situated between Lake Stanley and Waingaro River. Topographic map 260 M26 Cobb, from GR 2472500E 6020700N to GR 2479800E 6018100N. Currently named Snowden Range.

Westland/Canterbury Land District

Mount Montgomerie
Mountain along the main divide and at the head of the Mueller Glacier. Topographic map 260 H36 Aoraki/Mt Cook, GR 2267000E 5712300N. Currently named Mt Montgomery.

Canterbury Land District

Omahu Bush
Area of covenanted bush, along the Summit Road of the Port Hills of Banks Peninsula. Topographic map 260 M36 & M37 Lincoln, GR 2479000E 5727000N. Not named on current mapping, but locally known as both Omahu Bush and Prendergasts Bush.

Mount Schiehallion
Mountain along the Poplars Range, south of the Lewis Pass. Topographic map 260 M32 Boyle, GR 2468200E 5852900N. Currently named Mt Schehallien.

Otago Land District

Crystals Beach
Beach along the south Otago coast, and south east of Milton. Topographic map 260 H45 Milton, GR 2283900E 5440600N. Currently named Chrystalls Beach.

Johnston
Locality situated on State Highway 8 between Lawrence and Milton. Topographic map 260 H45 Milton, GR 2259600E 5461600N. Currently named Johnstone.

Southland Land District

Katherine Bay
Bay situated along the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau and opposite the North Fiord. Topographic map 260 D42 Livingstone, GR 2104800E 5553300N. Not named on current mapping.

Lone Island
Small island located in the proposed Katherine Bay. Topographic map 260 D42 Livingstone, GR 2104600E 5553300N. Not named on current mapping.

Ngaere Stream

Canterbury Land District

Tutaepatu Lagoon
Lagoon situated between Woodend and the coast. Topographic map 260 M35 Christchurch, GR 24860E 57646N. Correction from Tutai Paku Lagoon by previous Board decision of 1982.

Otago Land District

Lake Roxburgh
Locality situated at the southernmost end of Lake Roxburgh. Topographic map 260 G43 Roxburgh, GR 22220E 55190N. Amendment from Roxburgh Hydro by previous Board decision of 1948.

Southland Land District

Stirling Head
Easternmost point of the headland, immediately north of Port Adventure, on Stewart Island/Rakiura. Topographic map 260 E49 Port Adventure, GR 21459E 53385N. Correction from Starling Head or Sterling Head.

Mount Philipps
Mountain near Milford Sound (locality). Topographic map 260 D40 & Pt C40 Milford, GR 21044E 56032N. Correction from Mount Phillips.

Mount Philipps
Mountain on Resolution Island. Topographic map 260 B44 Resolution, GR 20140 54794N. Correction from Mount Phillips by previous Board decision of 1966.

Notice of the Decision of the Minister for Land Information, Paul Swain, re. the Assigning of Place Names

Pursuant to Section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice was given on the 3 June 1999 of the intention of the New Zealand Geographic Board to correct the spelling of the names Mount Diedrich, Diedrich Range and Diedrich Creek to Mount Diedrichs, Diedrichs Range and Diedrichs Creek; and to assign a new name, Kelvin Peninsula. Objections were received to these proposed names and were dealt with pursuant to Section 13 of the said Act.

I hereby declare that it is my decision that the names of these places shall be Mount Diedrichs, Diedrichs Range, Diedrichs Creek and Kelvin Peninsula, as referred to in the first column of the Schedule below, and that this decision shall take effect on the 16th day of November 1999.

Diedrichs Creek
Creek flowing westerly from the Diedrichs Range (corrected spelling) into the Hokitika River. Topographic map 260 J33 Kaniere, GR 23520E 58013N. Correction from Diedrich Creek.

Otago Land District

Kelvin Peninsula
Locality near Frankton and Queenstown extending from where the Kawerau River meets Frankton Arm, and extending south westerly along the southern shore of Frankton Arm to the end of the peninsula in Lake Wakatipu. Topographic map 260 E41 Queenstown and F41 Arrowtown, GR 21685E 55648N to GR 21745E, 55663N. Not named on current mapping and replacing Kelvin Heights.
