Notice of the Decision of the Minister for Land Information re the Assigning of Place Names

New Zealand Geographic Board logo.

Pursuant to section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice was given on 1 March 2001 and
18 October 2001 of the intention of the New Zealand Geographic Board to assign the names stated in the first column of the Schedule below, to the respective places described in the second column of the Schedule.

Objections were received to these proposed names and were dealt with pursuant to section 13 of the said Act.

I hereby declare that it is my decision that the names of these places shall be as referred to in the first column of the Schedule below, and that this decision shall take effect on 9 September 2002.

Mokiiti/Little Moggy Island Confirmed dual name for an island in the Titi/Muttonbird Islands, south-west of
Stewart Island/Rakiura. Topographic map 260 C49 & D49 Mount Allen, GR 2086300E 5326500N. Mokoiti Island (Little Moggy) currently shown on mapping. Mokiiti Island official by New Zealand Gazette, 1948, page 939; then changed to Mokoiti Island by New Zealand Gazette, 1962, page 2021; then Little Moggy added as the alternative name by New Zealand Gazette, 1966, page 18; and then Mokoiti Island (Little Moggy) became official by New Zealand Gazette, 1998, page 78.

Notice of Intention to Assign Place Names

Pursuant to section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice is hereby given of the intention of the
New Zealand Geographic Board to assign the altered or new names stated in the first column of the Schedule below, to
the respective places described in the second column of the Schedule.

Objection to the proposed names may be given in writing, setting out the grounds for objection, to the Secretary of the
New Zealand Geographic Board, care of Land Information New Zealand, Private Box 5501, Wellington, within a period of three months from the date of the New Zealand Gazette containing this notice.

Tuning Fork Creek Stream flowing north-westerly into Arawhata River from Lake Greaney and Minim Mere in the Haast Range, Topographic maps 260 E37 and E38 Cascade, GR 2169000E 5674500N and F38 Wilkin, GR 2171500E 5672500N. Currently named Tunning Fork Creek.
Mount Willberg Mountain at height 1245m situated approximately 5km south-east of Harihari, Topographic map 260 I34 Harihari, GR 2314650E 5777400N. Currently named Mount Wilberg.
Willberg Glacier Glacier situated in the Lord Range, south-east of Mueller Peak, Topographic map 260 J34 Whitcombe, GR 2335000E 5772400N. Currently named Wilberg Glacier.
Willberg Range Range extending from Mount Willberg (proposed spelling as above) in a generally south-easterly direction to Mount Kensington, Topographic map 260 I34 Harihari and I35 Whataroa, from GR 2314650E 5777400N to GR 2318450E 5765750N. Currently named Wilberg Range.
Willberg River River flowing generally westerly into the Poerua River from the Willberg Range (proposed spelling as above), Topographic map 260 I34 Harihari, GR 2315000E 5771250N and I35 Whataroa, GR 2313400E 5769650N and GR 2316850E 5769450N. Otago Land District
O'Leary Peak Peak at height 2570m situated approximately 1km north of Mount Earnslaw/Pikitakatahi in the Forbes Mountains, Topographic map 260 E40 Earnslaw, GR 2145850E 5611600N. Currently named Leary Peak by New Zealand Gazette, 1948, page 939.
Thurneysen Glacier Glacier situated south of Mount Barth, Huxley Range, Topographic map 260 G38 Haast Pass/Tioripatea, GR 2238000E 5666000N. Currently named Thurneyson Glacier.
Southland Land District
Lake Beddoes Lake situated on Pitt River, near its confluence with Wild Natives River, approximately 2km upstream from the upper reaches of Bounty Haven, Bligh Sound, Topographic map 260 B41, C41 and Pt C40 George, GR 2079850E 5577150N. Not named on current mapping. Lake Beddoes is proposed to be transferred from the lake proposed as Lake Crusoe (see below).
Lake Crusoe Lake situated on Pitt River, approximately 3km south-east of the upper reaches of Bounty Haven, Bligh Sound, Topographic map 260 B41, C41 and Pt C40 George, GR 2079700E 5574800N. Currently named Lake Beddoes.
Mount Gray Mountain at height 1502m situated approximately 4km south-west of the mouth of the Spey River at the West Arm of Lake Manapouri, Topographic map 260 C43 Manapouri, GR 2061100E 5501500N. Currently named Mount Grey.

Selborne Range Range, extending southerly from Mount Selborne, then south-easterly to Mount Alba along the Main Divide. Topographic map 260 F38 Wilkin, from GR 2184500E 5679660N to GR 2189270E 5663360N. Currently named Selbourne Range.
Selborne Spur Spur, extending south-westerly from its intersection with Rampart Ridge and Crevice Spur at an unnamed peak of height 1155m, for approximately 3km to Rampart Cliff, above the Waiatoto River. Topographic map 260 F37 Haast, from GR 2181100E 5680600N to F38 Wilkin, GR 2178100E 5678700N. Currently named Selbourne Spur.
Otago Land District
Mount Domett Mountain at height 1942m, centred between Otematata, Oamaru and Ranfurly. Topographic map 260 I40 Kurow, GR 2302200E 5590250N. Currently named Mount Domet.

Notice of Final Decision to Assign Place Names in the Ross Sea Region, Antarctica

Notice is hereby given of the final decisions of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa, to assign the names stated in the first column of the Schedule below, to the places described in the second column of the said Schedule and that such decision shall take effect on 14 August 2002.

Schedule

Rosemary Plateau 77°10'07"S, 160°43'26"E. A flat topped hill at height 1728m, joined by a narrow ridge to the northern slopes of Skew Peak, Clare Range, located approximately 45 km south-east from the coast at Granite Harbour.
Mount Airthrey 78°02'63.7"S, 163°57'53.9"E. A prominent summit at height 1175m, located midway on the range separating the Garwood and Marshall Valleys of the Denton Hills in the Southern Dry Valleys area.
Lake Chapman 77°01'S, 162°23'E. Lake situated on The Flatiron, south of the Mackay Glacier Tongue, at Granite Harbour.
McMurdo Sound 77°30'S, 165°00'E. McMurdo Sound is the area between Ross Island and the Antarctic mainland, with the following limits:
  On the West: From Brown Peninsula (78°02'S - 165°32'E), on the Hillary Coast of the Antarctic mainland, northward, along the Antarctic coast, to Cape Roberts (77°00'S - 163°09'E).
  On the North: From Cape Roberts eastward, a line to the northern extremity of Ross Island (77°11'S - 166°50'E).
  On the East: From the northern extremity of Ross Island southward, along the western coast of Ross Island, to Scott Base (77°52'S - 166°40'E), on the southern end of this island.
  On the South: From Scott Base south-eastward, a line to the northern extremity of White Island (78°00'S - 167°30'E); and thence from this position westward, along the northern coasts of White Island and Black Island and continuing north-westerly, to Brown Peninsula (78°02'S - 165°32'E), the point of commencement.
