Notice of Intention to Assign Place Names

New Zealand Geographic Board logo.

Pursuant to section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice is hereby given of the intention of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the altered or new names stated in the first column of the Schedule below to the respective places described in the second column of the said Schedule. Objection to the proposed names may be given in writing, setting out the grounds for objection, to the Secretary of the New Zealand Geographic Board, care of Land Information New Zealand, Private Box 5501, Wellington, within a period of three months from the date of the New Zealand Gazette containing this notice.

North Auckland Land District

Mount Parihaka

Hill at height 241m, just east of Whangarei. A beaconed trig station and lookout are located at the summit, Topographic Map 260-Q07, Pt R07 Whangarei, GR 316 089. Spelling correction from Mount Parahaki.

Clearwater Creek

Stream flowing generally northerly from the Dunstan Mountains to its confluence with the Rise and Shine Creek, near Bendigo, Central Otago, Topographic Map 260-G41 Cromwell, from GR 277 737 to GR 272 788. Confirming the extent of the stream to which this name applies, and renaming the lower 2km section as part of Rise and Shine Creek.

Garretts Bush

An area of bush immediately surrounding Sticking Up Gully, located near Outram in the lower hills north of the Taieri Plains, from GR 897 805 on Topographic Map 260-H44 Lawrence to GR 909 808 on Topographic Map 260-I44 & J44 Dunedin. Not named on current mapping.

Rise and Shine Creek

Stream flowing generally north-westerly from the Dunstan Mountains to its confluence with the Bendigo Creek, near Bendigo, Central Otago, Topographic Map 260-G41 Cromwell, from GR 299 762 to GR 256 797. Confirming the extent of the stream to which this name applies by renaming the lower 2km section, which is currently shown as part of Clearwater Creek.

Sticking Up Gully

A small gully surrounded by Garretts Bush, located near Outram in the lower hills north of the Taieri Plains, from GR 897 805 on Topographic Map 260-H44 Lawrence to GR 909 808 on Topographic Map 260-I44 & J44 Dunedin. Not named on current mapping.

Notice is hereby given of the final decision of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the name stated in the first column of the Schedule below to the place described in the second column of the said Schedule and that such decision took effect on 30th November 2004.

Adare Trough

From 69°30'S Latitude, 172°00'E Longitude to 70°45'S Latitude, 173°00'E Longitude. Part of a striking seabed graben feature comprising two ridges separated by a trough, in north-west Ross Sea.

Airdevronsix Glacier

77°31'S Latitude, 160°20'E Longitude. A major glacier flowing south-east to the Airdevronsix Icefalls, which in turn feed the Wright Upper Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Maps: Webb Lake and Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Anderson Scarp

77°33'S Latitude, 161°21'E Longitude. An acclivity and cliff, 935m, 1.3km west of Hall Bluff on the Dais, Wright Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Lake Vanda (1:50,000).

Anvil Pond

77°32'55"S Latitude, 160°48'48"E Longitude. A freshwater frozen pond 1.3km west of Healy Trough in the Labyrinth of Wright Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Balsley Peak

77°38'S Latitude, 153°36'W Longitude. A distinctive peak, c.1100m, located 2.25km south east of LaGorce Peak in Alexandra Mountains, Marie Byrd Land. Topographic Map: ST 5-8/5 Alexandra Mountains (1:250,000).

Mount Booth

77°26'S Latitude, 161°46'E Longitude. A peak, 1575m, surmounting the junction of mountain ridges at the south-west end of Murphy Valley in Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Butler Summit

Delinski Glacier

Fountain Glacier

Fritsen Valley

Glover Cirque

77°30'S Latitude, 161°05'E Longitude. A cirque occupied by a glacier in the south part of the Mount Boreas massif. The cirque is bounded on the north-east side by a ridge connecting Mount Boreas and Mount Thrace. Topographic Maps: Victoria Upper Lake and Lake Vanda (1:50,000).

Goldich Crest

77°29'S Latitude, 161°40'E Longitude. A peak, 1700m, between Mount Jason and Bull Pass in Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Gonzalez Spur extends ESE from the peak. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Gonzalez Spur

77°30'S Latitude, 161°45'E Longitude. A prominent rock spur 4km long that extends east south-east from 1700m high Goldich Crest in Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. The spur descends to 500m at the east extremity where it overhangs Wright Valley and forms the west side of the south entrance to higher Bull Pass. Hallet Valley

77°32'S Latitude, 160°17'E Longitude. A valley between Meddley Ridge and Vortex Col in west Asgard Range, Victoria Land. Topographic Map: Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Hawkins Cirque

77°30'S Latitude, 160°34'E Longitude. A cirque about 0.8km wide, in part occupied by a glacier, near the centre of the southern cliffs of Prentice Plateau, Olympus Range. Topographic Maps: Webb Lake and Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Hayes Bank

77°00'S Latitude, 171°00'W Longitude. A seabed feature lying north south, located west of Houtz Bank, in the Ross Sea.

Healy Trough

77°33'S Latitude, 160°52'E Longitude. A primary elongate trough in the Labyrinth of Wright Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, extending diagonally south-west by north-east across the eastern part of the feature. Topographic Map: Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Houtz Bank

77°00'S Latitude, 166°00'W Longitude. A seabed feature lying north south, located east of Hayes Bank, in the Ross Sea.

Koltermann Peak

77°29'S Latitude, 160°23'E Longitude. A peak, 2166m, in the east part of McAllister Hills, located west of Olympus Range in Victoria Land. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Leibert Cirque

77°30'S Latitude, 160°55'E Longitude. A cirque between Mount Electra and Mount Dido on the south side of Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. The cirque opens south to the Labyrinth. Topographic Maps: Webb Lake and Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Malin Valley

77°26'S Latitude, 161°51'E Longitude. An upland valley on the west side of Mount Cerberus in east Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. The valley opens north to Victoria Valley. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Marsh Cirque

77°30'S Latitude, 161°26'E Longitude. A cirque in the south part of Mount Hercules, Olympus Range. The cirque is 1.6km wide and in part occupied by a glacier. Topographic Maps: Victoria Upper Lake and Lake Vanda (1:50,000).

McAllister Hills

77°29'S Latitude, 160°22'E Longitude. A hill group or bastion between Shapeless Mountain and Wright Upper Glacier in Victoria Land. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Melcon Peak

77°27'S Latitude, 160°25'E Longitude, An ice-covered peak rising to 2500m, 1.8km south of Shapeless Mountain in Victoria Land. There is exposed rock on the south side of this wedge-shaped elevation. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Murphy Valley

77°26'S Latitude, 161°44'E Longitude. An upland valley on the north-east side of Mount Booth in east Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. The valley opens north to Victoria Valley. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Nylen Glacier

77°41'S Latitude, 161°29'E Longitude. A narrow glacier between Schlatter Glacier and Fountain Glacier, flowing south into Pearse Valley in Asgard Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Lake Vanda (1:50,000).

Parish Ledge

77°28'S Latitude, 161°31'E Longitude. A flat-topped ridge, 1642m, north of Mount Jason in Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Parish Riegel

77°26'S Latitude, 161°30'E Longitude. A riegel, or rock bar extending north from Parish Ledge, Olympus Range, across McKelvey Valley toward Insel Range. The riegel is 3.2km long, 1.6km wide, and is similar to Bonney Riegel in Taylor Valley. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).

Pentecost Cirque

77°30'S Latitude, 160°41'E Longitude. A cirque between Hawkins Cirque and Dean Cirque on the south side of Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. The cirque opens south to Wright Upper Glacier. Topographic Maps: Webb Lake and Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Prentice Plateau

77°29'S Latitude, 160°37'E Longitude. A nearly rectangular plateau of approximately 14.5 sq km, at the north side of Victoria Upper Glacier and west of Apollo Peak, Olympus Range, Victoria Land. The upper surface (c.1850 m) is ice covered except for scoured outcrops. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Shaw Trough

77°32'S Latitude, 160°54'E Longitude. A primary elongate trough in the Labyrinth of Wright Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, extending west to east across the north part of the feature. Topographic Map: Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Thrace, Mount

77°30'S Latitude, 161°07'E Longitude. A peak rising to 1800m at the south-east side of Mount Boreas, Olympus Range, in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The peak is connected by a ridge to the Mount Boreas massif. Topographic Maps: Victoria Upper Lake and Lake Vanda (1:50,000).

Virginia Valley

77°29'S Latitude, 160°56'E Longitude. An upland valley east of Wall Valley in Olympus Range, located between the north part of Mount Electra on the west, and Mount Circe and Mount Dido on the east. The valley opens north to McKelvey Valley. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Wall Valley

77°29'S Latitude, 160°51'E Longitude. An upland valley next next west of Virginia Valley in Olympus Range. Minotaur Pass is at the head between Apollo Peak and Mount Electra. The valley opens north to McKelvey Valley. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Warren Icefall

77°33'S Latitude, 160°25'E Longitude. An icefall entering the south part of Wright Upper Glacier north of Vortex Col, Asgard Range, Victoria Land. Topographic Map: Labyrinth (1:50,000).

Wrenn Peak

77°28'S Latitude, 161°59'E Longitude. A peak rising to 1750m on the ridge at the head of Sandy Glacier and Enyo Glacier in Olympus Range, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topographic Map: Victoria Upper Lake (1:50,000).
