Purpose of electoral streets & places data

The main role of electoral streets and places data is to assist electoral returning officers when registering special votes on election day (ie votes cast by electors in a polling booth located outside of their electorate (or overseas)). The address provided by an elector is matched against the Index to Places and Streets publication to identify the correct electorate, so that special voting papers can be issued to the voter for that electorate.

Publication & data

LINZ maintains the Authoritative Streets and Places (ASP) database from which it generates the Index to Places and Streets publication. The database is authoritative for electoral purposes only. It is maintained on a daily basis so that the Index can be published at short notice.

A new version of the Index to Places and Streets is published before each general election and is available for purchase from the Bennetts Government Bookshop in Wellington.

In the database you can find:

  • up-to-date nationwide listings of street names and place names that may potentially be used as part of an address, referenced against the territorial authorities and Electorates in which they occur
  • house number ranges or textual descriptions defining the extents of split streets (where a street crosses the boundary between General or Māori Electorates)
  • nearby place names to assist in locating
  • historic records of former names (since late 1992).
