New Zealand Place Names Database (Archived)

The New Zealand Place Names Database contains place names that appear on LINZ's Topographic NZMS260 map series. Official names are listed in the New Zealand Gazetteer of Official Geographic Names. Get help finding names.

Note that maintenance of the database, previously known as the New Zealand Geographic Place Names database, ended on 31 October 2008.

Because this database is not maintained, it is not authoritative and should not be used as the source of official geographic names defined by the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 2008.

The database includes details such as position (latitude and longitude) and spelling of place names that appear on LINZ topographic maps. The names on topographic maps are not all official names approved by the New Zealand Geographic Board Ng? Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB). Similarly, not all official names appear on topographic maps.

Macrons for M?ori names are not displayed in the place names database due to technical limitations. The NZGB has compiled a list of official names with macrons to assist in mapping, charting, signage, reporting, legislation, or other official documents.
