About the Review of the Rules for Cadastral Survey

The Rules for Cadastral Survey have been reviewed to ensure they meet the requirements of a changing surveying and regulatory environment.

Public consultation on the proposed new Rules began on 15 October 2007 and ended on 1 March 2008.

Following consultation, an expert committee made up of survey practitioners, stakeholders, and LINZ staff reviewed the submissions and made recommendations to the Surveyor-General on the shape of the final Rules, taking into account the feedback received.

The new Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010 were developed following a principal of ‘optimal regulation,’ which means they provide as much regulation as necessary, but as little as possible, given the level of risk. The new Rules define the minimum standards expected from surveyors, without prescribing how these standards are to be achieved.

The new Rules were finalised in June 2009 and are planned to come into effect in May 2010.
