Q&As on Accuracy Standards of the Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010
These questions and answers relate to accuracy standards of the new Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010. They were formed during a series of education seminars on the new Rules held around the country in September 2009.

- What is the interpretation of "urban" and "intensive commercial, industrial or residential purposes" in non-urban situations?
- Where there could be doubt as to whether a boundary should be class A or B, the surveyor will need to make a decision and if class B is chosen provide supporting information in the survey report.
- Using a Bowditch adjustment, what are the RF equivalents to the new standards?
- There are no RF equivalents to the new standards. RF limits last appeared in the Survey Regulations 1972, which were repealed in May 1999. Loop closures alone will not provide an assurance that the new Rules are being met.
- Will Least Squares be the only method of checking accuracies (especially where there is no direct link between a witness mark and a boundary point)?
- Although surveyors can use any technique to deliver adequate results, Landonline will verify that limits have been met in the pre-validation report. Experience in Least Squares’ adjustment will help surveyors to isolate errors.
- Under the current Rules, where adoptions fail the Landonline accuracy tests, a surveyor can lodge traverse sheets explaining why the differences are acceptable – will I still be able to do this?
- The new accuracy provisions in rules 3.1 - 3.7 are to be complied with. There is no equivalent to rule 26(3) in SGR2002/2. It is unlikely that a traverse sheet could provide the necessary information proving that accuracies are met despite failing the pre-validation tests.
- In combining new and adopted traverse information, if the adopted information is not accurate does the surveyor need to isolate where these inaccuracies are?
- Yes. The inaccuracies will need to be identified and resolved in order to meet the accuracy standards.
- Is it necessary to repeg a class B boundary if there is a conflict or can the boundary become a class C or D boundary?
- If the boundary meets either the class C or class D criteria specified in rules 3.2.3 or 3.2.4 then this class may be used. If the criteria is unable to be met, then the conflict will need to be resolved and the boundary marked (rules 6.2(a)(vi) & 7.1(b)).
