Q&As on Centreline Easements & the Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010
These questions and answers relate to centreline easements and the new Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010. They were formed during a series of education seminars on the new Rules held around the country in September 2009.
Other questions and answers on the new Rules are also available.

- Where existing easements cross over poorly defined primary parcels and the intersections were very poorly defined, do the easement intersections also have to be upgraded when the primary parcel boundary is re-surveyed?
- Yes. The non-primary parcel boundaries and their intersections with primary parcel boundaries will need to be surveyed to the same accuracy standard as the primary parcel boundaries (rule 3.3.1).
- When an existing centreline easement is required to be depicted as a polygon parcel, does this action require the old centreline easement to be legally cancelled and a new easement created?
- No. It is only the depiction of the easement on the dataset that changes. The legal right remains unchanged and the new polygons will be referred to as existing easements.
- How can an existing centreline easement that does not have a specified width be depicted as a parcel with a width?
- Centreline easements without a specified width are considered to be quite rare. The Guidelines to the Rules will clarify requirements in these cases.
- How is an existing easement that is not defined spatially (ie only in text) dealt with?
- These easements may be referred to by annotation (similar to how they are dealt with under the current Rules).
