Crown Grants
Crown grants were evidence of Crown land granted to private owners.

Order a Crown grant
You can view a Crown grant if you know the correct land district, Crown grant number (eg "CG 12345") or book number, and/or the original section number or legal description. Few Crown grants are copyable, so you will need to request an appointment to view most Crown grants. Other property record providers can help with more complicated searches and historical research.
Find the Crown grant number
You can find Crown grant numbers if you know:
- the description of the land as originally granted - you can access records directly with this description
- where the land is located - you can find the Crown grant number or book number and folio (eg "R78A folio100") by going back through the 'Registration District' registers held by LINZ or tracking back through the title system using 'prior references'.
Order a copy
You can order a copy of a land record or request an appointment to view records either online or by completing a printable order form and posting or faxing it to us.
About Crown grants
Crown grants were issued under the Royal Instructions of 1840 to Governor Hobson and later by legislation, such as the Crown Grants Act and the Land Act. There are two types of Crown grants:
- Bound volumes
- New Munster grants.
