Field Books/Notes
Surveyors use field books to record measurements obtained in the field. Field books show the bearings and distances between each survey mark involved in a survey.
Some field books are held with Archives New Zealand. Check the list of record locations to see where particular field books are available from.

Order a field book
To order page copies from a field book, you will need the field book reference (found on survey plans and old plan and field registers) and the pages required. In some cases, knowing the surveyor's name can help you find the field book reference. Other property record providers can help with more complicated searches and historical research.

You can order a copy of a land record either online or by completing a printable order form and posting or faxing it to us.
About field books
Field books date back more than 160 years. Older books may have place names and physical features (eg pa sites, hills, houses, etc). They are typically bound volumes from circa 1840.
