Public Counter Closures
On 23 February 2009, LINZ closed the public counters in three of its five regional processing centres: Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. Limited counter services are still available in the Hamilton and Christchurch processing centres for a small number of exceptions to 100% electronic lodgement (where land transactions are conducted electronically through Landonline). With the move to electronic lodgement, there was a significant decrease in manual processing work and the need for over-the-counter services.
LINZ is committed to maintaining public access to core survey and title paper records. The closure of counters means there are some changes in how you can access records and we have tried to minimise any impacts on customers.

Office closures
As well as public counters having closed at our Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin processing centres, these offices will eventually close completely and the historic records held with them will be relocated.
The first office to close will be our Wellington Processing Centre. This office will close on Friday, 23 April 2010. In preparation for this closure we will be moving records from this processing centre to the Hamilton Processing Centre and Archives New Zealand.

Get a copy of a land record
To order copies of land records such as a title (computer register) or a survey plan from LINZ, you can:
- use the online form to order a copy of a land record
- fax or post a completed land record order form for a title record (pdf 78KB) or survey record (pdf 66KB) to the LINZ processing centre that handles requests for the land district where the property is located (listed on the form)
- call 0800 ONLINE (0800 665 463) to request a copy of the form or
- email info@linz.govt.nz to request a copy of the form.
View survey, title and Crown property records
Reading rooms in processing centres are still open for customers to view survey, title and Crown property records. However, to view records you will need to make an appointment. To request an appointment, you can:
- use the online form to request to view paper records
- fax or post a completed viewing original land records appointment request form (pdf 62KB) to the processing centre that handles requests for the land district where the property is located (listed on the form)
- call 0800 ONLINE (0800 665 463) and select option 6 to request a copy of the form or
- email info@linz.govt.nz providing the record reference number, land district, record type and (if known) date of the record.
Counter services available
LINZ's Hamilton and Christchurch processing centres are New Zealand's designated land registry offices. For a small number of exceptions to electronic lodgement, lodgements of manual dealings can still made at these offices.
Get help with searching land records
LINZ does not provide search services. Other property record providers can help you trace back titles by prior references, complete more complicated searches and help with historical research.
