Processing Centre Counter & Office Closures

With the move to e-lodgement (where land transactions are conducted electronically through Landonline), there was a significant decrease in manual processing work and the need for over-the-counter services.

On 23 February 2009, LINZ closed the public counters in three of its five regional processing centres: Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. These offices have now closed completely and the historic records held with them are being relocated.

LINZ is committed to maintaining public access to core survey and title paper records. The closure of counters and offices means there are some changes in how you can access records and we have tried to minimise any impacts on customers. Read the closure of public counters fact sheet (PDF 453KB).

Counter services

LINZ's Hamilton and Christchurch processing centres are New Zealand's designated land registry offices. For a small number of exceptions to electronic lodgement, lodgements of manual dealings can still made at these offices.

Office closures

The first office to close was our Wellington Processing Centre, on 23 April 2010. The Dunedin Processing Centre closed on 3 December 2010 and the Auckland Processing Centre closed on 28 January 2011.

In preparation, we moved records from these processing centres to the Hamilton and Christchurch processing centres and Archives New Zealand.

Reading rooms

Reading rooms in the Hamilton and Christchurch processing centres are still open for customers to view survey, title and Crown property records by appointment. To request an appointment, you can:

LINZ does not provide search services. Other property record providers can help you trace back titles by prior references, complete more complicated searches and help with historical research.
