Rating Unit - An Update on the Definition of a Rating Unit
7 October 2002
Background
From 1 July 2003 the base unit of liability became known as the rating unit.
The rating unit is based on a certificate of title - one certificate of title equals one rating unit - although there are some minor exceptions in the rules.
For land for which no certificate of title exists, the rating unit will be based on the nearest equivalent instrument of ownership.
If you require clarification about your property's rating unit, eg home tennis court, lease, Māori freehold land, then contact your local authority.
